Creating Texture in Your Home Design

If you’re in the process of  building a home and you love interior design, you would have heard of the timeless design tip to add texture! Textural elements, when layered together correctly, will help elevate your home and bring your space together. However, achieving this look is more than just adding a throw rug here and some patterned wallpaper here and there. We’re sharing our top tips for mastering the art of texture in all areas of your home. After all, incorporating contrasting styles of design has its own everlasting appeal and charm.

Tiles

When you add texture in interior home design, the most important elements pop and are able to strike the perfect balance between different elements to avoid any restraint. But don’t get us wrong, you can still create texture without a raised surface!

Covering every surface of your home with a print will overwhelm your space. Instead we recommend incorporating a neutral tile with a soft texture, as colour and texture, when used properly, will supplement each other beautifully.

Cabinetry

Contrast is essential when you want your design to look balanced, especially when covering a larger surface like cabinetry. Softening the look of your home with multiple textured surfaces and less decorative items will create balance and not over-crowd your space.

With the help of texture, you can choose a prominent focal point. When using a neutral colour scheme in your cabinetry, we recommend also adding a contrasting element like a window back splash or some open shelving with a wood grain interior.

Exterior

If you want to be the envy of your street, a unique home elevation is a must. To give your exterior design visual texture, we recommend adding a stone feature wall, a wooden style cladding or matte framed windows.

Adding a mixture of smooth and irregular surfaces to your exterior design will give your home distinguishable character and will completely alter your street presence.

Flooring

Adding a mixture of textures to your flooring may seem like an obvious choice but making sure they complement your space is a whole other challenge. It’s important to select flooring that appeals to each room, such as a wooden grain, polished concrete or tiles.

Another great way to incorporate texture into your flooring is rugs! Choosing the right rug will add tactility and can transform the feeling of your space. You can even choose to layer rugs to create a real statement in your home.

Decor

Keen to bring extra dimension to your decor? There is something about natural, raw materials that instantly adds depth to a space. We recommend adding organic elements to your home such as artisan ceramics, woven baskets, and handmade furniture.

You can also take your walls from flat to textured with styling ideas beyond standard art and mirrors. Weavings, wall-mounted plants, and surfaced wallpaper will add a layer of texture to your walls, while a floating shelf will provide extra space to add décor.
